If noisy republicans try to ruin the day, they may well be discomfited by the reaction. SIR – Some people will have spent a great deal of money on train fares and highly priced accommodation in order to be present at the most significant historical ceremony of the past 70 years. SIR – I hope that today will be remembered for its grandeur and pageantry, rather than those who wish to disrupt proceedings for their own gratification.
Regardless of which political party is in power, and which individual is prime minister, the monarch represents our nation. In the run-up to the Coronation, there has been much discussion over its role and relevance, but the truth is that it is a crucial part of our national identity and pride – and is respected globally. The monarchy, however, provides us with continuity and stability. The arrival of the pandemic and its subsequent mismanagement, the succession of new prime ministers and the loss of a long-serving Queen created uncertainty throughout the land, and left people feeling vulnerable. SIR – As a country we have been presented with many challenges over the past few years.
